The Fruit of Waiting

Good morning, peeps!

(I don’t know why that orange is smiling.)

The fruits of the Spirit – don’t pray for them.  Don’t do it!  I don’t care if it’s the innocently-whispered “Lord, give me patience” when you’re standing behind someone who needs a price check, DON’T DO IT!  I remember praying for patience once [insert a heavy sigh here, thank you] and a few weeks later, I received a call from a friend asking if I would help teach vacation bible school at his church.  It wasn’t until I showed up on the first day that I was told the age range I’d be teaching: 3-4 year-olds.  Y’all.  I needed a vine full of patience-fruit for that.  Seriously, why do humans that little ask so many questions??  What do you really need to know at that age?  I ended up teaching a 5-minute expository message on the “Yes, Jesus Loves Me” song just so I could answer the 20 questions they asked after the first verse.  The question they should have asked was, “When do I tell you I need to go to the bathroom: before or after I wet my pants?”!  How ’bout you ask THAT?!

Nope.  Not prayin’ for that ever again.

I’m pretty sure that I haven’t slipped up and asked for patience, but it seems God is intent on cultivating that particular fruit in me lately.  I guess I should be grateful it’s not the “long suffering” fruit, even though I think I have enough of that laying around to make some pretty tasty jam.  No, [insert a heavy sigh here, thank you] it’s patience.  The way He’s going about it is different this time: He using His timing as the potting soil.  I don’t like it because that means I have to wait.  I don’t like to wait.  At least if I’m in a waiting room, there are magazines and a television screen to distract me.  Not this rip.  God has removed all of the distractions so that I am fully aware that He is making me wait.  There’s not even a scribbled-on Highlights mag to flip through.  I know “patience is a virtue”, but can’t I be virtuous in another way??  Ugh.

The fruits of the Spirit never come about easily and I don’t understand why.  It’s not like God has to wait until they’re in-season to give ‘em to us.  I mean, it is HIS Spirit – He already has them on-hand!  He could just quickly pull them out of His pocket and say, “Here! Now go’n somewhere!”  But nooo.  He takes His sweet time…pulling them out of US.

What fruit is God pulling out of you?  Oh, it’ll be easy to figure out.  Just look at your life…what are you waiting on?  Have a great day.

–d.
