Independence Day

July 4, 2001

It’s been 20 years since I left a relationship that was abusive in every sense of the word. Thankfully, I had the day off and I used it to my advantage: I packed everything I could into my sedan with my girls squeezed into the backseat, surrounded by clothes baskets, and never looked back.

While others may fuss over what this day means as it applies to this nation, “Independence Day” will always have a very special meaning for me. And THAT’S what I celebrate.
